It is 25 years ago today that Apple Macintosh produced their first computer. There are many articles and sources of information about this historic computing milestone. Just as many of the articles mention there continues to be a huge debate about the impact of Macs – some saying they have completely changed the world, others saying it is all about style over substance. Just as the Register article begins – “Over the short history of personal computing, no machine has inspired so much love and so much loathing, so many fanatical fans and so many frothing detractors…”
Have a look at some of the following resources:
- Apple’s first Macintosh turns 25 – BBC news article – ideal place to start with a good summary accompanied by online video where they compare the original Mac to a current laptop PC. Which boots first – do you need to ask?
- 25 years of Mac – from boxy beige to silver sleek – excellent short article from Wired.com with a fantastic composite image showing the complete product timeline.
- Evolution of Apple design – great range of images accompanied by useful summaries of each machine.
- 25 years of the Apple Mac – really good and detailed article from PC Advisor that covers not just a timeline with details, but also some analysis of the major Mac successes [lots of ads on the site though].
- In pictures: Apple Mac timeline – images accompanied by explanations, but it is a pity there aren’t larger versions of the images to view.
- Apple Mac – 25 years of innovation – short article, but good links onto related articles about the 25 years of Apple Mac, accompanied by videos and images.
- The cult of Mac is still going strong – good article from the Telegraph newspaper – makes it points very clearly
- The History of Apple – wikipedia article covering the history of Apple – lots of useful images and information, but as always do be careful to check facts.
- The good, the bad and the cheese grater – one individual’s summary of the five best and the five worst Macs. Useful, but use in conjunction with other sources.
